Jamesha wins her facility’s Sunflower Award

Jamesha received her facility’s Sunflower Award after receiving a heartfelt shout-out from a patient’s family member.

The family member wrote, “Mesha was a ray of sunshine every time she walked into my mom’s room. Her bright smile and cheery attitude instantly made her smile, even on the tough days. When my mom needed help, Mesha had patience and care every time. She ‘rescued’ her when she needed to get off the toilet and was her hero for that. Under Mesha’s care, my mom said they became lifelong friends. Mesha cared so much for her that she gave her a call on the day she passed, and Mom just lit up. She even wanted to hold on and see Mesha again one last time. The care and compassion Mesha delivered was above and beyond, and just so special. Mesha even came and spent her day off with her and was there for her last breath. The care, love and support was outstanding.”

Samantha is nominated for a DAISY Award

A patient’s family member nominated Samantha for a DAISY Award for her compassion, helpfulness and overall patient care.

The family member wrote, “We love this nurse! After a very long day of surgery, we were released to Samantha’s care. She was warm and welcoming and immediately made us feel certain our medical needs would be met and our questions would be answered. She quickly took control of getting us settled in. She introduced herself and made us feel comfortable asking for anything we needed. She was so thorough and concise while passing info to her replacement for the evening. We were very pleased to see Samantha return to us the following morning. She was bright and cheerful. She made sure to ask how we were doing when she arrived. During discharge, Samantha took the time to go over many pages of paperwork and patiently answered all our questions. One of the most important parts of her care for us was pain management. Samantha was very helpful in enabling us to stay ahead of it so my husband could have a speedy recovery. Samantha is the example of what a fine nurse should be!”

Arhonda receives three DAISY Award nominations

Arhonda received not one, not two, but three DAISY Award nominations for empowering her patients and for her kindness and personalized care. Here are some excerpts from the nominations:

“Arhonda is extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and she went beyond her duties to help me learn better ways to keep my diabetes under control. She taught me how to carb count and now I do it every day! I looked forward to her care because I learned something new every visit.”

“I have had the best care! Arhonda was so pleasant the whole time she was in my home. I am 92 years of age and have new meds to take — she helped me to understand each one. We really like each other! Before leaving she said a short prayer and held my hand. I have not been able to go to my church for a few weeks, so I really appreciated Arhonda! She is a wonderful person as well as a great nurse!”

“Arhonda went over each of my 10 medications, discussing the impact of each and what to look out for. She also provided a large medicine chest which greatly simplifies our management of medicine. We came away from her visit confident that we can manage my care going forward. She was a total delight to work with and we will miss her greatly.”

Alyson receives a DAISY Award nomination

A patient left a touching DAISY Award nomination for Alyson for her kindness and exceptional patient care.

The patient wrote, “Miss Aly is tenderhearted and a genuine treasure to her patients and their families. She always thinks about the steps of each plan and the ways to make the patient more comfortable. She used a smaller tube for me that eased my comfort. She connected with us by sharing why she became a nurse. She cared for me and my family as people and not just patients or conditions. Miss Aly is very nurturing and is an excellent patient advocate. She looks out for her patients and makes every night in the hospital feel homier. Miss Aly is a nurse who will go out of her way to improve the experience for patients and their families. Her tender heart shines through, and it is clear that she is an excellent nurse through her empathy and helpfulness. She is a true example of Children’s National Culture — caring for patients and their families as entire people with mercy and compassion. Any patient treated by Miss Aly will be very blessed to have her as their nurse. I know I sure was! I will always be thankful for Miss Aly.”

A colleague praised Julianne for her quick thinking and professional patient care.

The colleague wrote, “I would like to recognize, Julianne. I cared for and discharged one of our DEIP patients, and she expressed her gratitude for how Julianna advocated for her, ultimately leading to a return to the OR where the doctor got back into surgery and saved her right flap site. Throughout the shift, Julianna noticed changes in the patient’s condition, including lower vital signs and issues with the surgical site. She kept the doctor and his team informed on her observations and assessments, which led to the decision to take the patient back to surgery and prevent further complications. Nurses like Julianne make me proud to be in this profession. I have not had the opportunity to meet Julianne yet, but I know our patients are in excellent hands with her.”

The team member says, “Alyssa comes to work willing to help and has a great attitude. She also consistently shows initiative and an ability to work exceptionally well as part of our team. One Sunday night, she showed outstanding ability and willingness to take action by putting her (gloved) hands on an HIV-positive patient to help them stop bleeding. I feel so fortunate we had Alyssa here that night to help in that unique, critical emergency event. She consistently offered to help, asked what needed to be done and took appropriate action on any directive. We couldn’t have done what we did as fast as we did without her. I feel truly fortunate to have nurses like Alyssa during emergency events. Thank you for the opportunity to work with Alyssa, we are lucky to have her as a traveler on our team!”

The patient said, “Florence came to me when I was at the lowest point I have ever been. I came to the hospital feeling hopeless, helpless and mortified. She sat with me for what felt like hours. She talked to me about everything, including what I was going through, and brought me a feeling of peace. She made me laugh and made me smile. We talked about the life that lies ahead, and I felt a new sense of gratitude. She helped me stop and think about what I had gone through and made me realize that I am not alone in this. No matter how afraid I am, there is always someone to listen. I have never nominated anyone for this award, but I cannot leave without mentioning what meeting Florence has meant to me. She is a special person, and I believe with my whole heart that I was brought here to meet her as a gift — a gift of life. My life. For my family. For me.
