A patient’s family member nominated Delanie for a DAISY Award for going above and beyond during the patient’s hospital stay.

The family member said, “My dad had a head injury and was hospitalized in the neuroscience ICU. He is very hard of hearing and didn’t have his hearing aids. Delanie was so sweet, spoke directly to him at a volume he could understand and engaged in playful banter with him, which really raised his spirits. She went above and beyond by bringing a cake and decorating his room for his birthday! He really enjoyed her and was so excited when he found out she would be his nurse again. Her positive energy and ability to connect emotionally with him made a world of difference. I felt that she treated him like he was her own grandfather, and it was so sweet.”

Ashley receives a DAISY Award nomination

A patient’s family member nominated Ashley for a DAISY Award for going above and beyond and showing compassion for the patient and their family.

The family member wrote, “During my husband’s time in the ICU, Ashley cared for him on several occasions, and each time she went above and beyond in ways that made a lasting impact on our entire family. As his nurse, she took thoughtful steps to support his recovery, which played a vital role in helping him regain his strength. Ashley has a wonderful balance of attending to people and anticipating their needs. She was especially mindful of my husband’s care but also deeply aware of the emotional and physical toll on our family. She gently reminded me and my children of the importance of caring for ourselves. She sensed when our exhaustion showed and knew when to tell us it was okay to step away, to rest or to eat a meal. We would have never met those needs without her encouragement. Ashley wasn’t assigned as his nurse; she stepped in to help as often as she was able. She knew that simple things, such as standing in the sun or going outside, would help. She provided basic but essential signs to watch for that showed progress and hope. She recognized what was good and right about his recovery, but also recognized the hard things. Her balance as a caregiver is incredible. She sees the whole picture — the physical, emotional and mental — and works with compassion and gentleness. Ashley is a natural leader who inspires others with how she carries herself and the way she cares for others. She is a nurse who is set apart, and we were blessed beyond measure to have had her in our family’s life.”

Thang is nominated for the Sunflower Award

The patient wrote, “When I arrived at the ER, I was in a lot of pain. Thang was kind and caring as he moved my leg and foot to get the proper views of my break. Throughout my months of healing, I had several x-rays to ensure my ankle and fibula were healing properly. Every time Thang was my x-ray tech, I felt cared for because of the tenderness he showed when positioning my leg and ankle. He always sent me off with kind words. Recently, my husband had to have a chest x-ray, and when he came home, he told me how nice the x-ray tech was — it was Thang! Such a kind, caring person deserves all the recognition he can get, even if it’s simply knowing how much his compassion means to those he cares for.”

Molly received a shout-out for helping a family during the passing of a loved one.

The shout-out stated, “Molly was complimented by one of our families for the remarkable care she provided to their loved one before that patient ultimately passed away. Molly was acutely attuned to a change in mentation with the patient after caring for her for three nights and contacted the family to bring them in. It turns out that phone call gave the family some of the last moments with their mother while she was still lucid, and the family is incredibly grateful.”

Bailey receives a DAISY Award nomination

A patient nominated Bailey for a DAISY Award for her exceptional care and kindness after the delivery of her son.

The patient wrote, “My baby was born early and was in the NICU for one month. I have always believed, as the single says, ‘there are angels among us sent down to us from somewhere up above,’ and that was proven true when we met my baby’s nurse, Bailey. She is a ray of sunshine. She was different from the other nurses we had. All the nurses were great, but Bailey was so special! She greeted us like we were family and always had a smile on her face. She was so bubbly and would have the best conversations. Every day, I would sit with my baby, and the days Bailey was there were the best because it didn’t feel so lonely. When it was time for care, she let me do it without hovering. I had family come to visit, and she was so sweet and welcoming to them. I know some other NICU moms, and I always immediately say, ‘Have you had Bailey? If not, you should ask for her.’ As a hospital, you should know that having Bailey is one of the best things you could ever have. It’s been months since my baby came home, and whenever we talk about the NICU, Bailey is always at the top of the list of good memories. She’s literally an angel on earth, and she doesn’t deserve just one DAISY Award, but a whole field of them.”

Jason is nominated for the DAISY Award

A patient’s family member nominated Jason for a DAISY Award for his compassionate care, advocacy and dedication during their grandmother’s final days.

The family member wrote, “My grandmother came into the hospital from her assisted living in worse condition than I had been aware. When I called to speak with her nurse, Jason told me in no uncertain terms that she had significantly declined. I’ll never forget when he told me, “If this were my grandmother, I’d want to be here.” That was all I needed to hear to tell my job I needed to leave and get there ASAP. Over the next two days, he cared for my grandmother so kindly and tenderly, truly recognizing what was happening to my grandmother. She was dying. He was a great advocate for her care and made sure her concerns were heard. I will be forever grateful to Jason for taking such good care of my grandma and our family in our most vulnerable time.”

The nomination stated, “Mariah is the quintessential nurse’s nurse: a caring, confident, calm, knowledgeable and wise professional caregiver, made more impressive by her only being a nurse for three years. I was impressed immediately by her calm, confident demeanor and warm bedside manner. And let me tell you, bedside manner and warmth mean everything to my healing! She took the time to talk to me sincerely and get to know me. She always had a big smile on her face, and her consistently upbeat attitude brightened my day and sped up my recovery. Mariah went above and beyond the expected level of care and always personalized her approach. She also showed extra care for my well-being on one occasion when a research doctor took me into the hall and asked me to walk 10-12 feet. Mariah immediately intervened to ensure I was up to that task. Her depth of judgment helped me make decisions, especially on sensitive matters. I always maintained full confidence in whatever Mariah recommended, as she exuded the confidence of a veteran caregiver. So when I heard about the DAISY Award, I made it a point to write this email in support of such a recognition of Mariah for her truly outstanding service to me.”

Amanda receives two DAISY Award nominations

Amanda received two DAISY Award nominations for her thoughtfulness and dedication to quality care.

One patient wrote, “I was hospitalized right before my birthday and then realized I needed to begin dialysis. The day of my birthday, I had my first dialysis treatment. I was surprised by a birthday gift: It was a beautiful blanket to use during dialysis, some chocolates and two balloons. It was a touching gift from the nurse I had just met. It brought a smile to my face on a gloomy day.”

Another patient’s family member also wrote, “Amanda is an outstanding nurse. Her compassion for my son was obvious. He is very medically complex, and it can be overwhelming. Amanda was professional and maintained her composure even when dealing with difficult aspects of his care. She advocated for quality care for my son. No matter how busy she was, she took the time to explain things, answer questions and most of all, treat my son with dignity and respect.”
