Lompoc Vision: Make Time for Lompoc
by Christina Rizzo, special education teacher, Aya Education
It’s hard to believe, but the school year is coming to an end. Desks and lockers are being cleaned out, and everyone is excited about summer. As I finish my contract with the Lompoc USD, I leave knowing I was instrumental in ensuring children with special needs received the support they needed while helping the school I worked at maintain efficient and flexible operations. It has been an honor to call Lompoc my home away from home for the 2025-26 school year.
One of the best things about traveling with Aya Education as a special education teacher is the ability to choose where I want to work, and I chose Lompoc. Being from Virginia and coming to Lompoc, I’ve learned that they do things a little differently here. For instance, instead of saying “I-5” and “I-101,” Californians say “the 5” and “the 101.” I’ve also had many memorable experiences. With Lompoc being so close to Vandenberg Space Force Base, I saw rocket launches from our school campus, which was absolutely extraordinary! Living in Santa Barbara County, it was suggested that I check out the wineries on the weekend, and now every time I open a bottle of wine, I look at the label to see if it’s coming from the Central Coast of California.
The community of Lompoc is just as vibrant as its flower fields because of the residents who call it their home. The families of Lompoc USD are some of the hardest-working, welcoming and genuine people you’ll ever meet. Hearing my students share how their parents wake up before sunrise to work in the fields harvesting the fruits and vegetables we eat or how their parents are in the military truly brings a new perspective on being a special education teacher and how I strive to teach the whole student. I am incredibly grateful that families trust me to care for and support their children each day.
I plan on sharing these stories, memories and experiences in Lompoc with my friends and family this summer when I return home. Should anyone reading this (outside of Lompoc) find themselves in the Lompoc area, please make time for Lompoc. You will not regret it!
Thank you again, and see you in the fall!
