The Lompoc Vision: Every day brings a new reason to smile
By: Christina Rizzo, traveling special education teacher, Aya Education
May is filled with meaningful celebrations, from Mother’s Day and Cinco de Mayo to Memorial Day, as well as Nurses Week and Teacher Appreciation Week. As our nation recognizes educators during Teacher Appreciation Week, I want to recognize my fellow LUSD teachers for their dedication to shaping the future, sharing knowledge and supporting every student’s full potential. I’m also grateful to the Lompoc community for making me feel right at home.
Prior to moving to the Central Coast of California, Virginia was “home.” I went to college in Virginia. I earned my Master of Education in Virginia. I taught in the public school system in Virginia. And I raised my son in Virginia. I decided to become a traveling teacher with Aya Education because I knew it was time to step out of my comfort zone and try something new. My son headed to college for his new adventure, so I thought now was the time to embark on an adventure of my own while still helping children in need.
That path brought me to Lompoc, where I, a traveling special education teacher, joined the Special Education team at LUSD alongside some of the most caring, forward-thinking educators I’ve ever worked with. Relationships are at the heart of how this district operates. We collaborate to make sure every student with special needs receives the individualized instruction and support they deserve.
What’s struck me most is how seriously Lompoc takes that commitment, even on the hard days. When a support staff member calls out unexpectedly, the district has found practical ways to make sure students aren’t the ones who feel the gap. Lompoc USD uses the Shifts app to quickly connect qualified local paraeducators to classrooms when coverage is needed, keeping things consistent for the students who depend most on that stability. It says a lot about a community when its school district is actively looking for better ways to protect it.
Every day I step into the classroom, I always remember that teaching is never one-size-fits-all. It’s a student-centered, relationship-driven environment where every learner has an equal opportunity to succeed and thrive. What most of my students might not realize is while they have learned a bunch of new skills and I am grateful to be their teacher, I have learned just as much, or even more, from them.
Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to all of the incredible teachers!
