School-Based Speech Language Pathologist Jobs FAQs
How do I get started with finding a school-based SLP job through Aya?
Getting started is simple! First, register online with Aya Education and create your profile. Then, search for school-based SLP jobs, view pay rates and location details and submit your application with a few clicks when you find your dream job. From there, a recruiter will contact qualified candidates to discuss the position and start the process. As your #1 supporter and advocate, your recruiter will work with you every step of the way to make your experience as seamless as possible.
Do I need an active SLP license or any special certification to work in a school?
Yes. You’ll need an active SLP license in the state where you plan to work. License requirements can vary by state and district, and some states may ask for additional credentials, such as an educational service certificate. Your recruiter will walk you through the necessary licensing and compliance paperwork. We can also expedite state licensure in some instances, so you can get certified quickly and start your school assignment on time. If you’re applying for jobs in California or Washington, Aya will even cover the cost of your license, if applicable. Your recruiter can give you all the details.
Can new SLP graduates (CFYs) find school-based SLP positions?
Aya Education often has school-based SLP jobs for new graduates, including select opportunities for those in their Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY). Some school districts welcome new grads, and these jobs are specifically labeled as “Accepting New Grads.” Your recruiter will help you identify positions that fit your qualifications, guide you through applications and interviews and support you as you begin your career.
Do I need prior school or pediatric experience to be placed as a school-based SLP?
Prior experience in a school or pediatric setting can be helpful, but it’s not always required. Aya works with school districts nationwide, and many welcome therapists from clinical or other backgrounds. When creating your profile, make sure to highlight your relevant skills, including specific details like pediatric clinical rotations, specialized training and work experience. The more information you provide in your profile, the easier it will be for your recruiter to match you with the right opportunities that fit your experience and comfort level.
Will it be required to meet with the school and/or school district before getting hired for any school SLP assignment?
Once your recruiter submits your profile, most schools or districts will schedule a phone or video interview before making an offer to determine if you are a good fit for their team. Be prepared to discuss your experience with individualized education programs (IEPs), therapy methods for diverse learners and how you work with teachers and families. If possible, it’s helpful to share specific examples. If you’re nervous, don’t worry! Your recruiter will share insights, sample questions and coaching to help you feel confident and ready.
How long is a typical school-based SLP assignment?
Most school-based assignments follow the academic year. Assignments that begin at the beginning of the year typically span the full academic year, and assignments that begin partway through the school year will run from your start date through the end of that year. Short-term assignments may be available in cases such as a leave of absence. Assignments often include school holidays, such as winter and spring break, but details may vary by district. Your recruiter will walk you through the exact timeframe and schedule before you accept a position, so you’ll know exactly what to expect.
What happens after my school SLP assignment ends?
As your assignment comes to a close, you may have a few different paths to consider. If you and the school are a great fit, you may be able to extend your assignment into the next school year. If you’ve found a place you’d like to stay long-term, we may have opportunities to transition into a permanent role. Alternatively, if you’re ready for a change, your recruiter can help you find a new assignment in another district or state. As your assignment completion date approaches, you can discuss your options with your recruiter, and we’ll help you prepare for whatever your next step is.
Can I choose where I want to work – for example, stay local versus travel to another state for any of your school SLP jobs?
With Aya, you have access to school-based SLP jobs nationwide, including exclusive opportunities only available with us. Whether you’d like to travel or stay closer to home, we can connect you with opportunities that fit your needs. When you talk with your recruiter, just share your preferences and they’ll work to match you with openings that fit your goals. If you opt to work a local assignment, they’ll also go over the local pay rate with you.
