School-Based Physical Therapist Jobs FAQs
I’m in the market for a new job opportunity; how do I find a school-based physical therapist job with Aya?
Finding a job with Aya is simple. First, create a profile with Aya Education and upload your resume. From there, you can search for school-based PT jobs and view pay rates and location information. When you find a job you like, you can submit your application with a few clicks, and a recruiter who specializes in therapy placements will contact qualified candidates to discuss the position and start the process. As your #1 advocate and supporter, your recruiter will help make your experience as seamless as possible.
Do I need to have an active PT license and/or other licenses before applying for school-based PT jobs?
You need an active physical therapy license for the state where you will work, but you may not need to have it in hand to apply. Requirements differ by state and school district, and you may be able to apply while your licensure is in process. Your recruiter will help you navigate the licensing and credentialing process, and we can expedite applications when possible to ensure you start your assignment on time.
Can new physical therapy graduates find school-based PT positions?
Many school districts are open to hiring new grad PTs, and you’ll see these opportunities specifically marked as “Accepting New Grads” when you log in to search for jobs. Your recruiter will know which schools are open to new grads and will help you find a position that meets your needs and experiences. Aya also offers interview coaching and guidance to help you confidently launch your PT career in a school setting after graduation.
Do I need pediatric experience to work as a school-based PT?
Pediatric experience is helpful but not always required. Many school districts are open to PTs with backgrounds in other settings, and some offer mentorship from a lead PT or established therapy team to help with the transition into a school setting. When creating your account, make sure to highlight your transferable skills, specialized training and work experience. Your recruiter will help present your background in the best light and connect you with an assignment that fits your needs and experience level.
Is it required that I interview with the school district before being hired as a school PT?
Yes. In most cases, you should expect an interview with the district or school before being hired to determine if you are a good fit. During the interview, you may be asked about your experience with children, your approach to IEP goals, collaboration with teachers and parents or how you’d manage a varied caseload. Interviewers may also present scenarios to evaluate your problem-solving skills. It’s a good idea to come prepared with specific examples that highlight your abilities. Your recruiter can help you prepare and provide coaching, so you feel confident for your interview.
How long are school-based physical therapy assignments?
Most school-based PT assignments follow the academic calendar, typically lasting until the end of the school year. If your assignment begins mid-year, it will usually extend from your start date through the end of that school year. Districts may offer short-term contracts based on staffing needs, such as leaves of absence. Assignments can include school holidays, such as winter and spring break, but details may vary by district. Your recruiter will clearly outline the length of each assignment before you commit.
What if I want to renew my assignment after my school PT assignment ends?
As your assignment nears completion, your recruiter will work with you to determine your next step. If the district still has a need, you may be able to extend for another year. If you enjoyed the assignment and would like to stay permanently, we can help you with that process, too. Alternatively, if you’re ready for a change, your recruiter can help you look for a new assignment in a different district or state. Whatever path you choose, we’ll ensure you have the support and options you need.
Are school-based PT jobs only for travelers, or can I find a local position as well?
Aya offers school-based PT positions across the nation, including travel and local assignments. If you want to stay near home, your recruiter can connect you with nearby districts that partner with Aya. If you’re interested in traveling, we can help with logistics like housing and licensing. When discussing positions with your recruiter, share your preferences, and they will try to match you with a job that fits your needs. If you decide to work a local assignment, your recruiter will go over the local pay rate with you.
