School-Based Occupational Therapist Jobs FAQs
I registered with Aya Education and submitted my resume for an occupational therapy job. What happens next?
Once you’ve created an Aya Education profile, uploaded your resume and applied for a job, a member of our expert recruitment team will contact qualified candidates to discuss the position and guide you through the next steps. Your recruiter is a specialist in school occupational therapist jobs. They will be your partner, supporter and advocate, and will help you through every step to make your experience as seamless as possible.
Do I need to have my OT license and any special certifications ready before applying?
License requirements vary by state and district — some require licensure to be considered for a position, and others may allow you to apply while your license is pending. Some schools may require additional school-based credentials. Your recruiter will help you navigate these requirements, and we can even expedite the credentialing process when applicable. If you’re applying for a job in California or Washington, we can also cover the cost of your license, if applicable. Your recruiter can explain this process.
Does Aya offer school-based OT positions for occupational therapy graduates?
Yes. Aya Education often has school-based OT jobs for new graduates, which are specifically labeled as “Accepting New Grads.” When you search for jobs. Many school districts welcome new grads, and your recruiter will connect you with jobs that are open to entry-level candidates. We also offer mentorship, interview prep and resources to make your transition into the workforce smoother. Aya has worked with many new grads who have successfully launched their careers in school settings.
Can I still apply for a school OT job if I don’t have prior pediatric or school-based experience?
Yes. Pediatric or school-based experience is helpful but not always required. Schools often value your overall clinical skills and willingness to learn. When creating your profile, make sure to highlight your transferable skills, training and relevant work experiences. Your recruiter will match you with opportunities that align with your abilities and can find schools with strong therapy teams that can support you as you gain experience. Aya also offers free CEUs that can assist you as you transition into school roles.
What does the interview process for a school OT job look like?
After your recruiter submits you for a position, most schools or districts will schedule a phone or video interview to determine if you are a good fit for their team. Be ready to discuss your therapy approach, experience with students, collaboration style and familiarity with IEPs. When possible, try to share specific examples that highlight your professionalism and expertise. If you’re nervous — don’t worry! Your recruiter can help you prepare and practice, so you feel confident about your interview.
How long do school-based OT assignments last?
Most school assignments span the entire academic school year. If you start an assignment partway through the year, it will typically run through the last day of that school year. Some schools may have a need for a short-term assignment, which typically lasts 13 weeks. Assignments often include school holidays, such as winter and spring break, and some may include summer services, which can run into June or July. Your recruiter will always discuss the assignment length upfront, so you can plan accordingly.
What are my options after my school OT assignment ends?
As your assignment comes to an end, you have several paths to choose from. If you enjoyed your current school and the district still needs an OT, you may be able to extend your assignment. If the option is available, and you want to transition into a permanent role in the district, we can also assist you with that process. Or we can connect you to a new assignment in a different district or state. Whatever you decide, we’ll provide guidance and support to ensure a smooth transition into your next chapter.
Can I choose the location for my school OT assignments (e.g., local vs. travel)?
Aya gives you full control over where you work. You can pursue local OT assignments near home or explore school districts across the country. Your recruiter will tailor searches to your preferences and support you in achieving your career goals. If you choose to take a local assignment, your recruiter will also discuss the local pay rate with you.
What if I want to change my occupational therapy assignment from permanent to travel or vice versa, how does that work?
If you begin an assignment as a traveler and find a school or community you’d like to stay in, we may be able to help you transition into a permanent position within the district or find another position that fits your needs. You can discuss your options with your recruiter, and they will work to make your goals a reality.
Does Aya help with school district onboarding and orientation once I accept an OT job?
Yes. Once you accept a position, we’ll help you complete all requirements, from background checks and paperwork to district-specific training and ensure you know what to expect on your first day. School districts also usually provide an orientation to introduce you to their systems, staff and procedures. We’ll stay connected through the onboarding process to ensure you feel supported and ready to succeed in your new role.
